The Ultimate French toast - Crispy, Crunchy and Easy

This ultimate French toast makes a delicious weekend breakfast. It's perfectly crispy and crunchy, with a delightful custardy middle. And very importantly, this homemade French toast recipe is easy to make on the stovetop.

Have you ever wondered, how do you get French toast so crispy?

It's easy to make crunchy French toast. There's no special equipment or out-of-the-ordinary ingredients. You can do it on the stovetop.

All you need is the the secret ingredient: cereal flakes.

Yes, you read that right. If you haven't tried a cereal crusted french toast before, this might sound a bit strange. But trust me, cornflakes add a whole new dimension to the typical homemade French toast.

(Here's another secret: Another way to get crispy French Toast is by baking it. This Stuffed Baked French Toast has an awesome crisp crust.)

Cereal Crusted French Toast

You might know cereal crusted french toast as the Kylie Jenner French Toast. She shared a similar flakey French toast on her Snapchat, and it caused a wave in the breakfast world!

I fall for breakfast trends all the time, but sorry Kylie's French Toast, cereal crusted French toast isn't a new concept. Using a cereal crust is actually an old fashioned way to make French Toast

Corn Flake French Toast is an old fashioned French toast recipe

I first came across Corn Flake French toast inMarion Cunningham's The Breakfast Book, which is published in 1987. In it, you can find a recipe she calls JB's French Toast.

She claims that James Beard (yes, the James Beard) once told her they used to serve cornflake crusted French toast in the dining cars on the Santa Fe Railroad. So when you make this crispy French Toast, thank JB.

I loveMarion Cunningham's The Breakfast Bookfor classic breakfast recipes. It's the perfect book for any breakfast lover.

Use Corn Flakes or Frosted Flakes for the French toast crust

In my recipe for this Ultimate French Toast, I use cornflakes. Kylie Jenner's flakey French toast uses Frosted Flakes.

I prefer to use cornflakes over Frosted Flakes because:

  1. I think cornflakes give the French toast a heartier crunch and crips, and
  2. The maple syrup topping comes out better because it's not hidden under the sweetness from the Frosted Flakes.

You can replace the cornflakes in this recipe with Frosted Flakes though. Your call.

For touch of honey sweetness tryHoney'd Corn Flakes in this recipe! You get the crispiness from the corn flakes, but it's not as sweet as using Frosted Flakes.

How to make crunchy cereal French toast

Ingredients you need to make this Ultimate French Toast:

  • cornflakes (or try Honey'd Corn Flakes)
  • challah bread <-- What is it? It's sturdy enough to hold the cereal crust and stay custardy inside, without falling apart
  • eggs
  • milk
  • vanilla, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg
  • butter

5 easy steps to make Cornflake French toast:

  1. Mix together the eggs, milk and vanilla
  2. Allow the bread slices to soak in the egg mixture in a casserole dish
  3. Crush the cornflakes
  4. Dip the both sides of the egg soaked bread slices in the cornflakes
  5. Gently fry the crusted French toast in a skillet until golden and crispy

Easy, right? You'll have this Ultimate French Toast on the table in no time!

Ingredients

  • 6 slices challah bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon quality vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups cornflakes
  • 4 tablespoons butter

US Customary - Metric

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

  • Lay the bread slices in a casserole dish. Pour on the egg mixture. Allow to soak for 1 minute then flip the bread slices over. Allow to soak for about 10 minutes, until the bread has absorbed all the egg mixture.

  • Crumble the cornflakes until each flake is about ½ the size of an original flake. Place the cornflakes in a shallow bowl, such as a pasta bowl.

  • Heat a large (12-inch) non-stick skillet over medium heat and melt 2 tablespoons of butter. When the pan is hot, dip the French toast slices in the cornflakes, lightly pushing so the cornflakes stick to the bread slices.

  • Cook about 4-5 minutes on each side, until the cornflakes are lightly browned and the french toast is cooked.

  • Wipe down the skillet and repeat with the remaining slices.

I have been making Raisin cinnamon french toast lately and thought about crushing up some frosted flakes to dip them in before I fry them up. I love french toast and seen this recipe I usually add more raisins but wondered about using raisin bran instead but I will try the frosted flakes 1st maybe just add raisins in the cereal sounds really great.

Ingredients calls for cinnamon, nutmeg and salt, but the recipe never instructs to use them. I’m confused—does it go in the egg batter or the cornflakes?

How silly, I must have typed the recipe too quickly. I've fixed it! It goes in the egg batter. Enjoy!
