Oh, and FYI: Elordi doesn't sing or do any stage performing as Elvis, because the estate refused the use of any Presley songs. He can pose, though. And early photos show he does---as Butler, for Sofia Coppola has lifted identical, no hyperbole, scenes from Baz's "Elvis," the most blatant's being a close-up still of Elvis about to kiss Priscilla.

So Elordi fans and/or Austin Butler naysayers can praise Jacob as they want, but he simply cannot measure up, "louche" notwithstanding.

Looking forward to seeing a film from a woman director that doesn't scream ROMANTIC LOVE=BAD.

Plus my girl crush on Sofia Coppola remains intact...love her 40's style working pants. She has effortless style.

Even Peter Jackson using forced perspective to make Gandalf tower over the hobbits could possibly get a shot in which Elordi and his co-star are able to be that intimate.

And yet, r14, the reviewer I referred to spent a considerable amount of words on Elordi's performance. Perhaps you should inform him of your assessment of the movie's actual subject.

Anyway, the reviews are bogus. Last year they were all "Butler can't shake sounding like Elvis." This year they're "Elordi sounds like Elvis much more accurately than Butler."

I can imagine the negativity were Austin as much a giant as Jacob: "Austin Butler is way too tall to be a convincing Elvis."

I saw the film tonight. I generally like Sofia Coppola. I can give or take a number of her movies, but "The Virgin Suicides" and "Lost in Translation" are wonderful films as far as I'm concerned, so she'll forever have me as a fan for those two alone. I thought this was a very good film, though I don't know that I'd say I loved it or not. I thought Elordi nailed Elvis's voice and swagger for the most part, though there's no getting past the lack of resemblance, height disparity, and the fact that he has brown eyes—but clearly Coppola wasn't seeking out full verisimilitude. I think she was more concerned with capturing the feelings and impressions. The lead actress, Cailee Spaeny, handled the role of Priscilla very nicely, and was believable in what spanned a decade-plus of her young life.

I am not an Elvis expert by any means and didn't actually know the backstory of their relationship. I thought Coppola presented it in an almost surreal fairytale fashion. There is the inevitable downslide in which Priscilla is essentially kept locked away as a prisoner and completely compartmentalized by Elvis and his life. Irrespective of Elvis's questionable pursuit of her, I thought the film captured the undiluted magic of what it would be like to be a teenager whisked off to a rock star's mansion. Obviously, she learned that her options in life there were not what she perhaps imagined—and how could they have been? She was 17 f*cking years old when she moved into Graceland. The entire first arc of the story is possibly crazier than anything that happened later on in their relationship—the sheer randomness of how they met and came to be is wild.

R60, Cilla is an ex-wife, not a widow. Sheneeds to stay in the good graces now of Riley. It is a matter of record (her correspondence) that Lisa Marie HATED this project and thought her mother couldn't detect the malevolent Coppola motives because of the money.

As for "Who is the best Elvis?" Who is the best Dracula? Who is the best Romeo? Who is the best Churchill? Etc. This isn't a Butler v. Elordi thing. But I guarantee you the latter isn't going to be nominated for anything.

I saw this today. If you see this, see this for Jacob Elordi. His Elvis puts Austin Butler to shame. Butler played Elvis as a plucky country boy who gets corrupted by show business, better to serve as a protagonist for a mainstream biopic: Elordi plays him as a strange man aware of his own strangeness; the not quite of this Earth quality exacerbated by the fact that he towers over everyone. The biggest casting blunder of the year is how the hell they didn’t choose him to play the next Superman (perhaps he was asked and turned it down) because he would have absolutely nailed that.

The movie starts off well but becomes boring in its second half (Coppola’s Marie Antoinette had the same problem) because the actress who plays her (newcomer who is excellent) does not appear to grow as a character. This is a fairly standard ugly Hollywood marriage biopic, but even kitschy examples like Valley of the Dolls (partially inspired by Elvis) show the characters changing as the eccentricities and decadence of Hollywood break apart the marriage. Priscilla seems exactly the same as a 14 year old girl as when she drives away; the character arc is basically “Whelp, she’s had enough” and the credits roll. I thought even something like The Wolf of Wall Street handled the “wife in a guilded cage” character development arc better.

The musical cues are, as par for course in a Sofia Coppila film, excellent (Crimson and Clover, Santo and Johnny’s Daydream, the Ronettes, Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You.)

In point of fact, r66, Austin Butler did not play Elvis as becoming "corrupted by show business." Did you actually see his movie? The corruption was of others in their use and abuse of Elvis, who trusted them all with his health and his career.

The movie ends with his RL final concert song by a smiling Elvis, with Austin at the piano in a "fat suit" shown seamlessly morphing into a video of the real Elvis, still wanting to give his all for his audience.

Butler was tasked with portraying the ENTIRE life of Elvis (save for the "plucky country boy" who was played by the young Australian actor, Chaydon Jay), from 19 to 42; with singing in his own voice and performing; and with dealing with his parents (notably his mother's death), peers, pals, police, marriage, movies, a corrupt medical doctor, and, above all, his venal manager, "Colonel Tom Parker" ("not even a Parker"). All while becoming iconic.

Austin throughout showed every emotional response, including Elvis's basic humbleness, down to the nervous fingers gripping the microphone as he began his '68 Comeback Special.

Jacob? Apparently all he needs do is stay within a brief time frame, woo Priscilla, and then treat her mean (does the movie show her infidelity with her karate instructor?). Good for him if he pulls off the Elvis voice better than Austin; maybe that feat will finally shut up the ignorant about Austin's voice.

Finally, I'll just leave this here:

First of all, I think Priscilla can probably give a better recollection of the real Elvis than Lisa Marie who was only nine when he died

Secondly Butler did a good job but that movie was a mess in no part due to the emptiness that comes from hagiography.

You have a Philistine's approach to movie imagery, symbolism, motifs, light/dark, etc., if you think Baz created "a mess." (E.g., do you know why Elvis chose to wear a cape? Why his symbol was a lightning bolt?)

Moreover, the movie was not a hagiography. Did you not notice the Elvis On Drugs, the Elvis In Bed With a Teen Girl, the Paranoid Elvis With Guns, the Elvis Who Never Touched Cilla After Motherhood, or, predominantly, the Elvis Who Trusted Blindly?

What the movie's goal was, was to give back to us an Elvis who, born and bred in the Mesopotamia where Tupelo Gospel met Beale Street Blues, found he had an extraordinary talent that could merge these two musical rivers beyond Rockabilly into Rock and Roll, while never abandoning any genre. And thrilled generations with his voice.

Did you expect a movie about one of our few bona fide musical icons not to be mostly positive? Elvis overcame much; Elvis succumbed to much.

Baz wanted to portray the multi-faceted Elvis Presley, while concentrating on how he persevered through highs, lows, and comebacks. It seems that Sophia wanted only to show an angry control freak with Priscilla, unmitigated by any family or personal experiences of Elvis himself.

Finally, one wonders why Cilla is granted unquestioning credence in her telling.

Jacob didn't show Elvis from his Louisiana Hayride "debut," as a teen. He doesn't sing. He doesn't perform on the Vegas stage. He didn't interact with any of the Gospel, Country, or Black Blues influences on Elvis (I'm assuming). Mama. Col. Parker. Ed Sullivan. Steve Allen. His Trio. Austin CARRIED THE MOVIE.

IOW, and correct me if I'm wrong, all Jacob had to do was talk, romance Cilla, and then get all weird and mean with her.

To compare the two performances and their respective demands and decide that it is award-winning and Oscar-nominated Austin's that is the lesser, beggars belief. Read the reviews, any reviews, about the latter's performance. I'll bet Elordi doesn't get any "astounding," "transcendent," "phenomenal," "movie magic," etc.

Does The Hurt Locker count, R19? Although any movie that has the female lead saying “Hello? Hello? Hello?” five times in a row every time she gets a ringie dingie from the non-speaking caller might qualify as romance = bad.

I mean, did the caller actually SPEAK when they called in the early stages of the relationship? Maybe they clammed up after their target was reached.
