At our 3 HOMEBASE sites in NYC we are stopping homelessness before it starts. 95% of those who participated remained housed one year later. Syrena Huggins, MPA and Ashwin Parulkar shared the details at the 2023 Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness Conference. Join us in the fight to end homelessness and #GiveHomes this #GivingTuesday. https://bit.ly/HUSAEOYRead more about the panel:Syrena Huggins, MPA, and Ashwin Parulkar shared insights on the effectiveness of Homebase and prevention methods in a panel discussion: “Making Progress in Homelessness Prevention: Insights on Implementing Shelter Diversion & Eviction Prevention Programs From Six Community-based Organizations” at the 2023 Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness (CAEH) Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They detailed two factors for this success.First, social workers provide clients with multiple program services and supports –connecting them to social programs, mediating landlord conflicts, and providing financial assistance -through the Critical Time Intervention (CTI) method that strategically provides services over 3 three-month phases. Phase One entails visiting clients frequently and accompanying them to appointments. In Phase Two, HELP staff assesses participants' problem-solving skills and community emergency support systems to identify and address pressure points. And in the final period, our social workers facilitate a transition to more independence and reliance on community supports.Second, HELP USA's social workers use a tool called the Risk Assessment Questionnaire (RAQ) to identify clients' risks to homelessness and the appropriate amount and combination of services to provide to them.Huggins and Parulkar also discussed current challenges to providing Homebase services to clients in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which increased the need for financial assistance among vulnerable New Yorkers, and the migrant crisis, which has overloaded the demand for housing amid the city’s long-standing problems of increasing rental unaffordability and housing stock shortages.Get into the science and read the full HELP USA research study on Homebase, published in Cities journal. https://lnkd.in/g77gj_XaMake sure Homebase continues to succeed at keeping our neighbors safely housed. #GiveHomes this #GivingTuesday by making a fully tax-deductible donation to HELP USA.

❗Wales’s homelessness & housing support services change lives.Yet Welsh Government's funding for them in next year's draft budget is £24m less than it was in 2011/12 (accounting for inflation). We are now facing a situation where 77% of providers are likely to reduce service capacity, unless Housing Support Grant provision is increased in the final budget. 👉 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/d6Wdcz7x#HousingMattersWales #Homelessness #Housing #HomelessnessSupport #housingassociations

We’re speaking out against a proposed UK Government law to criminalise street homelessness. If passed, people in Wales and England could be fined £2,500 or put in prison for sleeping rough - or even looking like they might. Together with Crisis, CIH Cymru, Cymorth Cymru, Llamau, The Salvation Army UK and Ireland Territory, Tai Pawb and The Wallich, we've written to the Senedd to share our concerns. Let your Westminster MP know you stand with us against this cruel law: bit.ly/43jodXnWe know ending homelessness is possible, but proposals to criminalise people sleeping rough will only make this harder. Instead we need to invest in solutions like providing access to affordable housing and support services, underpinned by a legal right to adequate housing.

I have witnessed first hand the profound positive transformative impacts physically, emotionally and for mental health a Shelter First approach has on the homeless even after just a few nights. We need local, state, territory and federal governments to look at the empty, under-utilised assets all around us that can be mobilised quickly to assist our people at this time which is a humanitarian crisis.People are dying, people are hurting, people are struggling - enough is enough. You have a voice, we need immediate action, we are stronger together.I will launch a LinkedIn advocacy group in the coming weeks, where I hope you will join me.Shelter first - no one left outside.#advocacy #weallhaveavoice #shelterfirst #nooneleftoutsode #homeless #humanitariandisaster

Interesting. The power of self-determination. ..."the carrot of direct cash assistance is looking to be a more effective means of addressing certain social ills than either the stick of policing or the patronization of more traditional assistance programs, where aid comes with strings." A re-think of our traditional ways of dealing with social issues.

Denver experimented with giving people $1,000 a month. It reduced homelessness and increased full-time employment, a study found. msn.com
