James Stephen Myers (May 3, 1946- June 29, 2024)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Stephen Myers of Mount Pearl on June 29, at the age of 78. He passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his parents Ralph (2010) and Teresa Myers (2009) of Bell Island, NL and parents-in-law Hector (1971) and Lillian Reid (1995) of Chapel Arm and Petty Harbour, NL. Leaving to mourn with loving memories are his wife Gloria, two daughters Sherrie (Tim) and Niki (Shawn), granddaughter Amelia, brothers Basil (Edna) and Clarence (Joyce), as well as many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and many other relatives and friends.

Jim was a devoted husband, proud father, even prouder grandfather, son, and brother. He was a protector, coach, volunteer, cheerleader of daughters and granddaughter, storyteller, listener, advice giver, wisdom sharer, avid reader, gardener’s assistant, master expletive sayer, big belly laugher, and sometimes bad joke teller. He was also a fixture on the sport fields, arenas, and courts of Newfoundland. Memorably, he was an obligated (yet enthusiastic) “taxi” driver. For many years, Jim ran a very non-lucrative side hustle affectionately called “Jimmy Cabs”, a service necessarily established to ensure that his daughters (as well as many others over the years) were always able to get home safely, day or (late) night. We are eternally grateful for this and all the wonderful memories. The role of grandfather was his obvious favourite – Amelia was the absolute light of his life. He loved his wife Gloria for over 55 years and his presence, constancy, and care will be missed greatly by her, but their love will endure eternally. Jim was also a very brave man who persevered through many of life’s struggles. May he rest in peace knowing that he was greatly appreciated, respected, and absolutely loved.

The family would like to thank the workers of TLC Nursing and Homecare for their assistance and care in the last year of his life, especially Jessica, Shannon, and Zerit, who are angels on this earth. Much appreciation is also extended to Dr. Kim Babb of the Geriatric Medicine Program for her time, support, compassion, for treating Jim with dignity, and for going above and beyond for him and his family.

Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mt. Pearl on Thursday, July 4th from 11:00am-3:00pm and 5:00-9:00pm. Funeral Service will be held at Our Lady, Queen of Families Parish on Friday July 5th at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers are accepted, but donations can also be made in lieu to the Cancer Care Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Passed peacefully away at Carbonear General Hospital on June 24, 2024, Margaret E. Kelloway of Salmon Cove, age 81 years. Predeceased by son: David; parents: John and Mary Skehen; brothers: Bernard (Sue), Jack (Florella), Patrick (Joan), and WIlliam (Margie); sister: Ann Marie (Duncan). Leaving to mourn, daughter: Geraldine (Terry); sons: Brian (Alona) Mcgrath, Leslie (Suzanne), Gary, Paul (Julie), and Bill Somerton; grandchildren: Erin, Cameron, Kayla, Jonathan, Sheena, Taylor, David, Damien, Natasha, Meagan, Paul Joseph Jr., and Christian; great-grandchildren: Avery Grace, Quinton, Benjamin, Ethan, Tyler, Jackson, Courtney, Liam, Ava, and Mya; brother: Alphonsus (Frances); sisters: Joan (Norm), Mary, and Irene; also a large number of other relatives and friends. Visitation at Noel's Funeral Home, Carbonear on Thursday, June 27 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Friday, June 28 at 2:00 p.m. from Noel's Memorial Chapel, Carbonear. Interment at Riverside United Church Cemetery, Salmon Cove. As an expression of sympathy, flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society at cancer.ca.

Lillian Moakler (Basha) passed peacefully away on June 20th, 2024 at the incredible age of 101. Predeceased by her husband Cyril (1965), and her parents Gertrude and Elias. Brothers Nauciph (Elizabeth), William (Kathleen), and Edward. Sisters Regina (Edward), Mildred (James), and Mary (Jack)

Leaving to honour her legacy are her two daughters, Jude and Anna (Kim Jessiman). Grandchildren Ian (Robyn), Sheffia, Andre (Denise), Morgan (Jacques St-Pierre), and great-grandchildren, Lila, Freyja, Astrid and Magnus.

Lillian grew up on Bell Island and worked many jobs. Graduating from Grade 11, she was too young to go into training as a nurse. While waiting, she took a commercial course, but was unable to find work on Bell Island. Instead, she worked in a grocery store, and then after that closed, she found employment at a shoe store. Then, finally in 1942, she was able to train at the General Hospital as a nurse. Lillian graduated in 1945, and worked on staff during the K of C fire. After this, she applied to the department of health, and was offered three jobs. Two of them being in cottage hospitals, and the other on a hospital ship known as “The Lady Anderson.” This ship travelled from Grand Bank to Burgeo. Travelling from Bell Island to Portugal Cove many, many times, she felt she could handle this journey. (Fools rush in, where angels fear to tread.)

There was no doctor aboard this ship, so Lillian worked 8 months as a doctor, dentist, pharmacist, midwife and more for $42.00 a month. After her time on the coast, she came back to St. John’s and decided to study Public Health Nursing at the University of Toronto.

Lillian was very active in the community. She skated, danced (taught square dancing and line dancing), bowled, played softball and tennis, and her claim to fame, curling. Lillian is held in the Hall of Fame for her curling. She taught Bridge, and was an avid player. She always said she had three claims to fame, one family, two, curling, and three her friends. She spoke of her friends highly to family, and cherished them.

Thank you to the staff of Kenny’s Pond, especially Bev and Carol-Ann, whom she adored. Thank you also to the staff of the Health Science Centre emergency, and unit 4NA for your kindness and dedication to care.

Rest in Peace, Lillian. We will celebrate you and your legacy forever.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Monday, June 24, 2024, from 1 p.m.- 9 p.m. Funeral will take place at Caul’s Chapel at 11 a.m. on Tuesday with inurnment to take place in the R.C. Cemetery, Bell Island on Wednesday.

Happy Father's Day to all Dads, Granddads, Uncles, Step-Dads & father-figures in your life!Here is one of my favourite pictures (c.1960) of my Dad (Stan Hussey) and his 3 lovely brothers, who grew up on what is now called Hussey Street at Scotia No. 1. From left to right: Uncle Charl (1918-1979), Dad (Stan, 1921-1961), Uncle Ted (1923-2003) & Uncle Alvin (1928-2008). All were Wabana miners, sons of John A. Hussey (1893-1948), seen in the next photo (c. mid-1940s) in his mining clothes. Next is my maternal grandfather, John (Jack) Dawe (1894-1965), (c. 1943).

March 27, 1960 - June 6, 2024: Virginia Mary Reid, age 64, passed away at her home in Kitchener on June 6, 2024. Predeceased by her parents Edna and Frank Brown as well as her beloved brother Frank and cherished sister Janet. Left to mourn is her husband Don Reid and her siblings Blanche (Dux), Carol (Chuck), Glen, Laura (Tim), Shawn (Paulinka), Marlene (Scott) and Connie (Jody) and priceless sister in law Glenys. Gin leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Nyssa and Noah as well as her sons Jay and Darryl. Also fondly remembered by her step children: John, Donny (Alicia), Jason (Mandy), Judy (Paul), and step grandchildren. Private cremation has taken place with interment of ashes at Parklawn Cemetery. All are welcome to join the Reid Family for a Celebration of Life Friday, June 14, 2024 at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club from 1-4 pm.

​March 3, 1937 - June 4, 2024:Jean Delores Dymond (nee Dwyer) age 87 years. Passed peacefully away after a long illness in the presence of the people she loved at the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre on June 4, 2024.

Predeceased by her husband, Clarence (Doll) Dymond; parents, Lena and Vincent Dwyer; sister Ruth and brother, Jack (Mary).

Leaving to mourn her daughters: Brenda and Kathryn (Conrad); grandson, Jarrod (Kenzie); nieces: Karen, Denise, Cheryl and Carmen; nephews: Vincent and Sean; brother-in-law, Cal Lein and many friends and other relatives.

Thank you to Roxanne, Victoria, Maria, Debbie and Bella for looking after our mother so well over the last two years. And thank you to the Dr. LA. Miller Centre for her care in her last two days of life. And thank you to the therapy dogs who visited shortly before she died, it made her so happy.

A Funeral service will take place from Barrett’s Memorial Chapel on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 10:30am with a reception to follow t Barrett’s Reception Centre. Burial will take place at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road at 1:30pm. The service will be livestreamed. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William (Wink) Power, who departed this world peacefully at the age of 74 on June 3, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Wink valiantly battled ALS, displaying the same stubborn strength that characterized his entire life.
Born on January 8, 1950, Wink was a man who lived his life with an unyielding spirit and a deep sense of pride for his family and Newfoundland heritage. Known for his playful antics and infamous knack for cheating at cards, Wink brought joy, laughter, and a touch of mischief to all who knew him.
Wink’s legacy is one of love and resilience. He was a devoted husband of 51 years to Carmel, a caring father to his three children, Lori, Mark, and Carl, and a cherished grandfather to Brittany, Bailey (Cameron), and Ashley. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Jaida, Beckham, Rosalie, and Jiraiya, and a loyal walking companion to his favourite little four legged friend, Buddy.
Wink is survived by his aforementioned family, as well as his three sisters, Ita, Gerry (Billy), Patsy, and their families. We take solace in the fact he is now reunited with his parents, Gerald and Patricia Power, his stepmother Marie Lang Power, sister Mary-Beth, and brother John.
Wink’s life was a testament to his enduring love for his family and his roots. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, as we remember the strength, love, and laughter he brought into our lives.
Cremation has taken place, and Visitation will take place on Saturday, June 8th, at the Pendergast Funeral home on Bell Island

There will be a funeral service held in Cambridge, ON, at a later date to celebrate Wink's life, so family and friends can gather to honour and remember the remarkable man he was.

Passed away peacefully on May 28th, 2024 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital at the age of 84. Bill put up a strong fight right to the end.
Beloved husband to Nancy (nee Lichty) for 62 years. Amazing and Loving Dad to William Byrne and Peggy Byrne. Proud Poppy of Andrea Stark and Jacob Byrne (Vidushee Singh). Adoring Great Poppy to Hendrix, Harlow, Jupiter and Zodiac. Sadly missed by his brother-in-law Larry Lichty (Diane) and wife Nancy’s lifelong best friend Carol Johnson. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in both Ontario and Newfoundland.
Predeceased by his parents Peter and Mary Byrne (nee McGrath).
Bill was born on November 26th, 1939, in Bell Island, Newfoundland. He loved boxing and watching boxing matches on TV. He even boxed professionally in the late 60’s and owned a boxing club in St. John’s, NFLD in the early 80’s. He was the Mayor of Paradise, NFLD also in the early 80’s and built Byrne’s Subdivision 1978 – 1985. Bill loved social gatherings and going for morning coffee at McDonalds or the Cambridge Mall to shoot the breeze with his buddies. He had a great sense of humor and there was always a twinkle in his eye. Anyone who met him took a liking to him instantly and he made everyone feel welcome and at home.
He was a great protector and provider for his wife and kids. He loved and adored his family and always wanted to have them around. He had a special bond with his son William, they enjoyed bugging each other for fun, and his daughter Peggy was Daddy’s Little Girl. He was an amazing father figure to Jacob and Andrea, treating them and their children like his own.
The family would like to thank the emergency room team and ICU team at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for their compassion and care in his final two days.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no formal memorial service. A Celebration of Life for close friends and family will be held at the Byrne residence on Father’s Day, June 16th, from 2:00pm-5:00pm.

August 16, 1963 - May 30, 2024: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Cathy who left this world on May 30th, 2024 at the age of 60.
Cathy was a loving mother, Grandmother, sister, Aunt, cousin and Friend.
Cathy was a devoted mother to her two loving children, Stacey and John “Willie”, who were the light of her life. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother, adoring her granddaughter River-Marie, loving her beyond measure.
Cathy was born and raised on Bell Island. Cathy lived a full and vibrant life. She was known for her kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering support to those around her. She had a passion for taking everyone’s money in a game of cards. She would never walk away empty handed.
Cathy was predeceased by her loving parents Myrtle and Stanley Kitchen. Her 2 sisters (Genevieve and Isabel) & 1 brother (Ned).
Leaving to remember and mourn are her daughter Stacey (Ambrose); son John (Jessica); granddaughter River-Marie; her five sisters; seven brothers, and many other family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
Visitation to take place on June 7, 2024 at Carnell’s funeral Home, at 329 Freshwater Road in St. John’s, between the hours of 2-4pm, 7-9pm, with cremation to follow.

Lillian Marie Cruickshank, a cherished soul whose warmth and love touched all who knew her, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, at Sakura House, at the age of 78. Born on June 1, 1945, on Bell Island, Newfoundland, Lillian was a tower of strength and resilience throughout her life.
Lillian was the beloved wife of the late Warren Cruickshank, with whom she shared 40 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a family foundation strong enough to support the generations that followed. She was a loving mother to Jim (Deb) Rogers, Grant Rogers, Lorrie (Alvin) Boutilier, and Warren (Maryanne) Cruickshank. Her legacy continued to flourish through her adored grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to her later years.
One of eleven children, Lillian's life was rich with the bonds of siblings. She is survived by her sisters Rita Kennedy, Annette (Wayne) Fairbarn, Helen (Doug) Lucas, Marina Coxe, and her brothers Bernard (Gerri) Kent, Gus (Margaret) Kent, Reg (Bernadette) Kent, and Rawlins (Jacquie) Kent. Her sister-in-law Bridget Kent, along with many nieces and nephews, will also hold Lillian's memory dear. Lillian was predeceased by her son Grant, who passed away at 16 from cystic fibrosis, her parents William and Lillian Kent, her brothers Bill and Don, and her sisters-in-law Pauline and Lois, and brothers-in-law Blair Kennedy and Chris Coxe.
Lillian's love for her birthplace was profound, and she cherished every opportunity to return to Newfoundland, where the ocean's breeze and the rugged landscapes spoke to her soul. Her home was a reflection of her love for nature, often filled with the sounds of birds she adored and the loyal companionship of her dogs. Music was the melody of her life, and she found great pleasure in the rhythms that resonated with her spirit.
An avid snowsho*r, Lillian embraced the outdoors with vigor and encouraged others to find the beauty in every snowflake and trail. Her adventurous spirit was matched only by her nurturing heart, as she was always ready to lend an ear or a helping hand to family and friends.
Lillian's life was a tapestry of love, resilience, and joy. Her presence was a comfort, her laughter a melody, and her guidance a light for the paths of many. As we bid farewell to Lillian Marie Cruickshank, we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the indelible mark she left on our hearts. Her spirit will continue to guide us, just as the stars guide sailors back to the shores of Newfoundland she so dearly loved.
In her passing, Lillian leaves behind a legacy of love, a family strengthened by her presence, and memories that will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know her. As we reflect on her life, we are reminded of the beauty of a life well-lived and the enduring power of love and family. Lillian's memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories we share and the love we continue to give, just as she taught us.
The family invites friends and relatives to join them at the funeral home on Monday, June 3rd, form 2 to 4 and again from 6 to 8 pm. The service will be held on Tuesday at 11 am in the chapel. Lillian will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery.

William (Bill/Buck) Francis Haines Jr.
In Loving Memory of William (Bill/Buck) Francis Haines Jr., whose spirited departure from this world on April 2, 2024, left us all in awe after he bravely faced a brief yet fierce battle with illness. He lived his life like one epic adventure, right to the very end.
Bill was born March 10, 1953, in Wabana, Newfoundland amidst a snowstorm. He spent his childhood gallivanting around Bell Island, embracing life with abandon. His youth was a masterclass in mischief and mayhem, where no stone was left unturned in his quest for adventure and exploration. He often reminisced about these early escapades with a wide grin, finding richness in even the simplest of moments despite modest means.
His adulthood was equally thrilling- think camping under starry skies, traversing the globe, engaging in sports, countless bike rides (pedal and motor), hikes and weekends at the cottage with dear friends. Bill’s energy, curiosity and sense of wonderment knew no bounds. Every day was a new exploration.
Bill possessed a remarkable mind, and was a true jack of all trades and a master of all. His knack for mastering challenges and his uncanny ability at finding solutions to any problem made him the go-to person for co-workers, friends and family alike. This prowess extended to his professional life, where he co-founded the successful business Jade Logic with his dear friend Jeff. He poured his heart and soul into his work, finding fulfillment in every challenge and triumph. He was the poster boy of the sentiment of loving what you do so much that you do not work a day in your life.
Above all, Bill’s down-to-earth nature, strength of character, kind heart and sense of humour (that was as sharp as his toolset) endeared him to all who knew him. His boundless energy and levity could brighten even the darkest of moments. He will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to share his warmth and laughter.
He loved his immediate family (Sue and Megan) endlessly. Sue was his childhood sweetheart and wife of 50 years. Her unwavering love, care and devotion was his lifeline. Megan who he always lovingly referred to as his “favourite daughter”, inherited his zest for life that mirrors his own. She treasured her father beyond measure and he will forever remain her role model and source of strength.
Words cannot begin to reach the depth of the love that these three shared. Together, they built a life filled with cherished memories, characterized by meaningful moments, thoughtful gestures and an active lifestyle brimming with love.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be deeply missed by his siblings: Mary (Wayne), Gary (Wendy), Fred (Wanda), Bruce, Don (Steve), Tina (Larry) and Blair (Valerie) and his Aunt Esther, Uncle Gord, Aunt Enid and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, William and Catherine.
Bill’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His abundance of kindness, unwavering determination, and irrepressible humour will be dearly missed.
In honour of Bill, family, friends and colleagues are invited to a Celebration of Life at his home, to share stories and memories in the outdoors and home that he enjoyed so intensely. The Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday June 2, 2024, at the Haines Residence, anytime from 12-5pm.

With great sadness we announce the passing of John Joseph Gauci on May 20, 2024 age 77 years. Remembered with love by Selena, daughters Tanya (Tommy), and Vanessa (Chris); his adored grandchildren Kayla (Taylor), Taylor (Kyle), Charlie, Lauren, and Thomas. He delighted in visits from his great grandchildren Winter and Kylie and always laughed at their silliness. John also leaves memories with his sisters Marg (Ray), Mary (Phil), and Carm, his beloved brothers Tony (Anna) and Frank (Maureen) and sister-in-law Heather (Rob). He will be fondly remembered by his good friend Ron Francis who he spoke with daily. Also leaving to mourn many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends and colleagues. John's family would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff of 5 South A of the Health Sciences Centre for the compassionate and care they gave him over the past few months. Visitation to take place from Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Thursday, May 23, from 2pm-9pm. Funeral service will be held from Caul’s Chapel, LeMarchant Road, on Friday, May 24, at 11:30am, with inurnment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Columbarium. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations can be made in memory of John to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

​Bridgett Mary Agnes Pynn (Jackman). Dec 21, 1952 - May 18, 2024.

Bridie spent her final days surrounded by her loved ones and passed peacefully at The Dr. Walter Templeman Health Centre on Bell Island.
Predeceased by her parents John (Jack) and Isabelle Jackman; her brothers: Alphonsus, Kevin, Jack, Terry, Neil and Billy; her sisters: Carmel and Karen. Deceased members of the Pynn family, father in-law Edward, mother in-law and Jessie, brother in laws Ray King and Edgar Pynn along with his wife Marg.
Left to mourn with the fondest memories are her partner in life, forever and always, Frederick Pynn; children Joe Lewis (Lisa), Fred Jr, Michael (Nicole) and Dougie Fox (Jessi) whom she thought of as her fourth son. Her siblings Charlotte Walsh (Dave), Linda King (Pat), David Jackman, Brian Jackman (Liz), Chris Jackman and Kenny Jackman (Alice); brother and sister in-laws Diane Jackman, Frank Callahan, Doris Bennett (Sandy), Marg King, Florence Pynn; Ed Pynn (Cathy), Eric Pynn (Jean) and Cliff Pynn. Bridie will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, relatives and numerous friends, especially her best friend Theresa Durdle.
In addition to her wit, Bridie will be remembered for her kindness, compassion and generosity to all those who knew her. She spent most of her life helping others and felt blessed that she was able to do so. She was considered a mother figure to many and a beautiful loving friend to even more. If we’ve learned anything from Bridie’s life, let it be to treat each day as a blessing and that the best gift you can give to anyone is your time, patience, guidance and an ear without judgement - those things are all free!
A special thank you to Linda, Bridie’s sister and confidant. The care you’ve provided over the past few years comes from a place of love and respect. The Jackman & Pynn families would also like to thank the entire staff at the The Dr. Walter Templeman Health Centre for their care and compassion especially during Bridie’s final days. Your kindness helped to make a very difficult time much more bearable. To all those who’ve stopped by with food, called, visited, gave freely of your time and helped in any way possible, we sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held at St. Michael’s Parish on Bell Island at 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 22nd. There will be a Celebration Of Life in the parish hall later that evening from 6:00 to 9:00pm. As per her wishes, there will be a private family burial at another time.

KENNEDY, Hubert (Huey) Peter James. Born on September 5, 1948 in Bell Island, NFLD

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved brother and uncle Hubert Peter James Kennedy on December 19, 2023. God welcomed Hubert from his life on earth into his eternal home in heaven. He was reunited with outstretched arms by his wife Jane, and his parents James and Edna Kennedy. He will be greatly missed by his brothers Myles (Sheryl), and Francis (Marilyn), and his favourite sister Anita (David), his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Huey's spirit was as generous as his heart was kind. His love filled our hearts as ours also filled his. Huey was humble and soft spoken, but his strength shone brightly. He shared his battles with those who loved him and inspired us with his open and honest journey. We celebrated each victory with him. He was a man before his time when it came to openness. Huey loved to make people laugh and would entertain his family and friends with his jokes, impressions, and stories. His legacy will live on in the stories we will share of his love and humour.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Hubert and his wife Jane will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11am at St. Pius X Parish, 9 Waverly Street, Brantford with a luncheon to follow. June 11, 1958 - May 9, 2024: It is with broken hearts that we announce Diane’s passing on Thursday, May 9th, 2024 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 65.She is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Don, her loving children; Donny (Sally) Power and Lori (Dave) Deveau and her treasured grandchildren: Cody and Damian Deveau and Ryan and Katie Power. Dearest sister to Pat, Jim, and Fabian (Fil) Conran, Carol Conran and Bernice (Rick) Jarvis, sister-in-law to: Paula King, Helen (Kevin) Power. Predeceased by her parents, Pat and Alice Conran, brothers Leonard and Ken Conran, sisters Lori and Tina Conran, and in-laws Don and Mary Power and Claire and Carmel Conran.

The world is darker today – a ray of sunshine has been extinguished.
It shone first on her family from the time she was a child to the present day, on the students she mentored in her long teaching career, most especially “sus hombres en Monsefú, Perú” and on her young charges in Mary Queen of Peace School, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, at St. John Bosco School in Shea Heights, St. John’s, on her sisters in the Mercy Congregation, and on the unworthy man she met while Newfoundland teachers were on strike in 1983.
As was common at the time, she was born into a large family on Bell Island, being the 3rd of nine who survived into adulthood. Her parents were Clara Walsh (née Roberts) and Richard Walsh. Her older siblings were Frank (deceased) and Mary, and she was followed by Rich (deceased), Ed, George, Pat, Betty (deceased) and Brian. Her family suffered the loss of 5 other children at a young age, although Bernetta only remembered one of them.
She was a small child, almost doll-like, much-favoured by her mother and father. She started school late (maybe because her mother thought she was too small to enter the rough-and-tumble of life in a large school). She progressed through the trials (unknown today) of public exams under the strict guidance of the Sisters of Mercy until she became, first, a teacher (in her first year she taught a class of 52 grade one students – in the days before kindergarten) and then followed the example of her school mentors and joined the Sisters of Mercy herself.
She spent 16 years in the Mercy Congregation working as a teacher and attending university. The highlight of her career to that point was the six and a half years she spent as a teacher in a school founded by the Mercy Congregation in Monsefú in the north of Perú in 1961, where she took on a class of 5-year old boys, who considered her to be an “angel from heaven” with blue eyes and wearing a white, ankle-length habit – and her mezzo-soprano voice was very much that of an angel. She remained their teacher until she departed in 1968. A special bond was created with these boys (and some girls) that has lasted until the present day.
Ultimately, the religious life ceased to be her forte, but teaching continued to be her passion. For the next 19 years she mentored boys and girls, mostly in Grade 8. Her spritely and dynamic character allowed her to develop once again a similar relationship to that with the Peruvian children. It was not quite as intense because the children moved on to another grade in the following year. Maybe an expression uttered by a boy in St. John Bosco School gives some flavour to the latter years of her career: “She’s small, but she’s mighty!”
She made Patrick a very happy man when she married him 40 years ago – she was a loving wife and supporter and was happy to follow him when career changes and relocation uprooted any prospect of a settled existence. Her already large family became even larger with the arrival of in-laws and a total of 25 nieces and nephews. Her marriage to Patrick was not blessed with children but she became a very special aunt and great-aunt to those nephews and nieces she got to know. Unfortunately, distance meant that not all of these families became familiar to her. It may not be appropriate to single out one person, but Bernetta dearly loved one very special niece, Susan Watson (née Kent) – a love that has been returned a thousand-fold. She was able to spend many winters visiting Susan in Australia, where she also became the very special great-aunt of two beautiful girls. They appreciated her wicked sense of humour and provided her with great joy when they celebrated her 90th birthday in January, before her declining health robbed us all of her sparkle, joy, fun, and love.
Special mention must also be made of her cousin, Sister Loretta Walsh, whose love, devotion, and nursing sustained Bernetta (and Patrick) on her final journey. Thank you.
Cremation has already occurred. Visitation will take place at Caul’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at St. Teresa’s Church, Mundy Pond Road at 11:00 am. Mass will be followed by inurnment at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road.
Reception to follow at the 150 RCAF Wing at 565 Roosevelt Avenue, St. John’s, A1A 5B2.

September 30, 1966 - April 25, 2024: Diane passed away suddenly on April 25th 2024 at the age of 57 years. Predeceased by her parents William (Buck) and Beatrice (nee Drover) Mercer, father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Ann (nee Mercer) Cummings and brother Maurice Mercer.
Leaving to mourn are her husband Joseph Cummings, son Steven (Emily), daughter Stephanie (Jonathan), 4 grandchildren, Aaliyah, TJ, Emma and Killian. Brother Walter (Barb), Sisters Rosalind (Rosita), Valerie (Andy), Sandra (Nigel) and Special sister-in-law Verna, and very special friend, Mary Howard.
Mom was loved by many near and far. She would go above and beyond to try and help everyone around her the best way she could. Mom's smile would light up a room, her positive energy spread like wild fire to people that were around her. She was a good listener, she loved telling it like it was no matter if you wanted to hear it or not. She was our rock, she kept things grounded. We suffered a terrible loss but together as a whole we will get through it.
We would like to thank the paramedics for your quick work, Dr. Laurie and the nursing staff of Bell Island hospital for everything that they did. Mom's close friend Crystal Clarke, brother in-law Johnny Cummings, Jonathan Ruby and Tonya Tremblett for sticking by our side making sure we were OK.
We want to thank everyone for the phone calls, messages, cards and the house visits, nothing went unnoticed and we are very thankful.

Funeral Mass will be held on Sunday May 5 2024 at 1 p.m. at the Church of St. Cyprian and St. Mary, Anglican Church of Canada on Bell Island. As per Diane’s wishes there will be a private family gathering after her service.

May 4, 1938-April 27, 2024: In loving memory of William (Bill) Murphy, who passed away surrounded by the warmth of his family on April 27th, 2024 at Grand River Hospital. He leaves behind his cherished wife Regina (Jean) Murphy (nee Nugent),with whom he shared 60 years of unwavering love and companionship. Bill's legacy lives on through his three devoted children: Jacqueline Hicks, Keith Murphy (Patricia), and Colin Murphy (Dawn). He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather, bringing joy to the lives of his six grandchildren: Jason Hicks (Kelsie), Michael Hicks, Matthew Murphy (Abbie), Bradley Murphy (Maizie), Allysia Murphy, and Rebecca Murphy, as well as his great granddaughters Brookelynn and Hailey Hicks. His family will always remember him by his laughter, quick wit and humorous anecdotes that never failed to uplift those around him. Remembered fondly by his brothers Martin and Thomas (Lorna), and sisters Mary Hickey, Margaret Harrington, and Sheila Nugent(Gus), Bill was a beacon of strength and kindness within his family circle. Passed away on April 14, 2024 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital after a short battle with stomach cancer.

Wayne Morgan, 74, passed away at home on Thursday April 18, 2024.He was cared for by his daughters through his battle with cancer. He leaves behind his "girls"; daughters Magen (Shawn) and Carly (Stephen). His granddaughters: Emily, Isabelle, Skye and Hannah brought so much joy and fulfillment to his life and he will be missed dearly by them.

October 17, 1940 - March 31, 2024: James Raymond Hisco*ck passed peacefully on March 31, 2024 surrounded by loving family.
Jim was born in 1940 in Lance Cove, Bell Island. Predeceased by his precious wife Elizabeth, he leaves many friends and relatives to mourn. Honest, humble and unselfish, nothing gave him more pleasure than a warm spring day spent gardening. A special thank you to his neighbours the Mitchells, who kept a close eye on him these past few years.

Kennedy, Diane Margaret, born June 7, 1950, formerly of Bell Island, Newfoundland, passed away, March 27, 2024, peacefully with her family by her side. Diane was the eldest sister of 14 children and was very loved by her parents’ siblings and family. She was a member of Saint Patrick’s Church of Cambridge. Diane loved life and socializing. She loved to sing, and dance, loved her diet co*ke and watching hockey games on TV.
Diane is pre-deceased by her parents’ John and Rita Kennedy, brother, Kevin and Myles Kennedy sister, Joan Spencer, and infant siblings, Sharon and Michael.
Survived by: Christine (Glen) Ching, John (Melanie) Kennedy, Donna (Terry) Lyle, Jeannie Kennedy, Carol (Bryan) Gadke, Gary(Christine) Kennedy, Paula(Jeff) Tremblay, Bonnie(Dave) Anderson, many nieces, great nieces, nephews and great nephews.
Upon Diane’s request, it will be a private ceremony for family only. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to send a big thank you to the staff at CMH for their care and support.

January 28, 1951 - April 8, 2024
Passed peacefully away on April 8 at the age of 73, after a long-fought battle with Parkinson’s. Mom is reunited with her precious family who have gone before her, her husband Edward (2017), son Ryan (1999), and parents Hayward and Florence.
Left with the fondest and most cherished memories, her daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Barry, treasured granddaughters Charlotte and Isla whom she lovingly referred to as ‘Nanny’s Dollies’, devoted sister Nancy and her partner Shelly, dedicated brother David and his wife Elaine, as well as her circle of cousins, brother-and sister-in laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mom spent her years working and caring for those who needed her and selflessly putting others first. She was happiest when she was outdoors and even in the later stages of her illness, she managed to get out on the toboggan on a snowy day or go for a dip in the pond in the summer. She was a determined and inspirational soul with a deep sense of faith. She will be known for her cookies and cherry cakes.
We are grateful to the staff of Admiral’s Coast and Glenbrook Lodge who helped care for mom over the past five years.

May 2, 1940 - April 6, 2024It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret Mary Quigley (nee Cantwell), formerly of Bell Island. Mom passed peacefully surrounded by love on April 6, 2024 at the age of 83.
Predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Robert Quigley (June 8, 2008).

June 16, 1957 - March 26, 2024. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Purcell, peacefully at the Hilltop Manor LTC on March 26, 2024, at the age of 66 years old. Barb was born June 16, 1957, on Bell Island, Newfoundland and moved to Cambridge Ontario December 16, 1991. Predeceased by her parents Helen Purcell and Gordon Purcell, her sister Lynn Purcell, and her brother Gordon Purcell Jr. Beloved partner of 25 years to Ron Bowdring. Loving mother to her children Robert Purcell (wife Emily), Harold Dadd, and Darryl Dadd. Dear sister of Lorraine Purcell, Joan Purcell, Mary Purcell (Mike),Jenny Purcell, Shelley Purcell (Rob), and Terry Purcell. Barb was a devoted and loving grandmother to Brittany, Gracelyn, Nicholas, and Matthew along with the many others who grew up calling her "Nanny Barb." She was a proud great- grandmother to Aaliyah, Harper, and Jackson Loving stepmother to Ronnie Bowdring (kim), Shawna Bowdring (Adam), and Robert Bowdring. Passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Saturday March 23, 2024, at the age of 75. Loving and devoted husband of Linda, who together shared 54 years of marriage. Cherished father of Rob and Connie (Jason) Vivash. Proud grandfather of Brooklyn, Emily, Abigail, Lyndsay, Carley, Evan, and Nathan. Robert will also be sadly missed by his siblings Diane Lahey (Bob), Rick Lahey (Lee), Judy Robertson (Al), Anthea McEwen (Denis), Lill Burke (Cyril) and Jim Lahey, as well as his brothers-in-law Don and Mike Nugent, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Predeceased by his parents Richard and Margaret Lahey and his sister Joyce Lahey. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel of Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas St., Cambridge, on Saturday April 6, 2024, at 12:00p.m., with the family receiving guests one hour prior. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our Mother’s passing on Thursday March 7th2024, in her home in Granisle, British Columbia, after a lengthy illness. Mom was 82 years old.
Born September 5, 1941 in Bell Island, Newfoundland, Shirley was the oldest girl of 11 children, and part of the ‘silent’ generation: born during a period of war and economic depression. She often told tales of the hardships she endured during her childhood and sadly her memories of Bell Island were not happy ones. She married at the age of 16 to Albert Rees (then 13 years her senior), and moved first to Sept Isle Quebec in 1959 and later to Toronto in 1961. Her colorful stories continued, as they struggled to raise a family before settling to Sudbury in 1968, and finally to Elliot Lake when Albert retired, and where he passed away.
In 1994 Mom moved to Granisle British Columbia. She loved the stretches of road (we’d call her a gypsy for her love of having wheels beneath her), and the lovely scenic hills, where in 1994 she married James (Herman) Parks (predeceased). She called those years the best of her life, getting dolled up, playing darts at the local pub and tending to her garden where she erected a tree for every child and their spouse. She loved fishing for hours with her son Albert, and took great pride in her annual outside Christmas decorations. She also loved the occasional visit to the Casino in Prince George, and for one nightly weekly it was off limits to call her as she watched Coronation Street undisturbed.
Her failing health in recent years left her feeling isolated, but she became a voracious reader of 19thcentury British tales of wartime and depression – something she always felt close to. She would get lost in another world, and will be remembered in her favorite chair, bending back the spine of a good book.
Mom is survived by her children Albert (Lisa) of Granisle, BC, Derrick (Jacqueline) of Victoria, BC., and Karen (Gorden), Randy (Chantal) and Walter (Sherry), all of Sudbury, ON. She will be remembered by brothers Gordon, Howard and Douglas, and by sister Mary as well as sisters-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren and extended family.
A special thanks to Albert and Lisa for their many years of thoughtful care for Mom. We hope she is somewhere at the great Casino in the sky, hitting the jackpot with Aunt Sheila.
There will be no service, at her expressed wishes.

January 20, 1955 - March 22, 2024: It is with heavy and broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Brother, Uncle and Friend, M. Glen Flight of St. John’s, formerly of Bell Island. He passed away on March 22, 2024 at the Health Sciences Centre after a courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Stella Flight; and his brother, Paul Flight.

Glen was a very proud 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, St. John’s. He was also a former employee of Swiss Chalet for 18 years. A job he thoroughly enjoyed and where he met and worked with so many of his wonderful friends.
To know him was certainly to love him. He had this big radiant and infectious smile that lit up every room he entered. His kind and gentle nature will be remembered by all.
We miss you so much already, but it gives us peace knowing you are now reunited with Mom, Dad and Paul. What a reunion that must have been!

January 7,1939-March 19, 2024 It is with great sadness, that the family of Philip, announce his peaceful passing at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Center, Bell Island. Phil belonged to a large family 12 children. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Catherine and Phil; siblings, Bridie Brown and husband Hubert, Catherine Collins and husband Ed, Veronica Burry (Louis), Alice Nolan (Mike), Molly Kennedy (Clayton), Don and his wife Eileen, James (Dianne), George, and John. Leaving to mourn are his devoted sister Nancy Murphy and brother Gerald (Jenny). He will also be remembered with a smile and prayers by his 30 nieces and nephews, extended family, caregivers and friends. Phil was a very generous and faithful person. As a younger man he loved to ride his bike, play accordion, piano and was a very good cook. Phil was also the favourite babysitter of all the cousins and we saw him often. He gave each of us a nickname that fit our personality. Anyone who knew him probably had their cards read, at some point. The outcome was always positive as he always buried the cards, he considered unfavourable, with the stealth of a magician, so they wouldn’t appear in the draw. We were always grateful for that caring gesture. During his LTC residency Phil received much support and kindness from a very caring Support Team, who provided comfort and affection. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the attentive staff at the Dr. Walter Templeman Health Care Center for their medical expertise and compassion. Cremation has already taken place. Family and friends are invited to visit Pendergast Funeral Home, Bell Island, on Sunday, March 24th from 2-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will occur at 2 p.m. on March 25th at St. Michael’s Church, Bell Island with burial to take place at a later date.

PETER FRANCIS NEARY, born 15 August 1938, Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfoundland; died 14 March 2024, St. Joseph’s Hospice, London, Ontario, Canada.Predeceased by his parents Peter Francis and Margaret (Dalton) Neary; brothers John, Stephen, and Gerald; sisters Margaret Durkin and Mary; niece Paula and nephews Gerald and Bernard. Peter joined the Department of History at the University of Western Ontario in 1965 and taught until his retirement in 2005. He also served as dean of the Faculty of Social Science. He wrote extensively on the political, economic, and social history of Newfoundland, on many of the artists who painted her land and sea, and on the development of Canada’s policy for veterans of the Second World War. His last two books were written with Melvin Baker and published by McGill-Queen’s University Press:Joseph Roberts Smallwood: Masthead Newfoundlander, 1900-1949(2021); andOut Here:Governor Sir Humphrey Walwyn’s Quarterly Reports from Newfoundland, 1936–1946(June 2024).
Peter was devoted to his family and friends (especially to his four wonderful grandchildren),to wide-ranging conversation, good food and books, music, his church, vigorous walks in Gibbons Park, and picking berries on the hills of Newfoundland. He had never turned an ignition key in his life.
The family thanks the medical and nursing staffs of University Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospice for their compassionate care of Peter.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica, 196 Dufferin Avenue, London, Ontario at 10:00 am, Wednesday 3 April 2024, followed by burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 806 Victoria Street (west half), and a reception at St Michael’s Roman Catholic Church parish hall, 511 Cheapside Street. Arrangements are being overseen by Harris Funeral Home.

Today in the History of Bell Island: On March 20, 1897, The Daily News reported that “20 horses from Bell Island were on George Street with loads of produce such as potatoes, turnips, cabbage, etc., which sold at reasonable prices. The finest potatoes which came to the city these months past came from Bell Island this morning.”The story went on to say that the Tickle had become blocked with ice in February and people crossed with horses to the mainland on the ice. And, yes, they are talking about “that” George Street that was the heart of the St. John’s business district; it was the “farmers’ market” of its day. I daresay there was a tavern or two there where the thirsty farmers could gain some sustenance after their long walk over the ice and in Portugal Cove Road to the downtown before having to turn around and do it again to get back home with supplies for their families. Below are two photos from the late Sonia Neary Harvey of her father, Tom Neary, crossing the Tickle from Portugal Cove on the ice with a convoy of horses pulling catamarans loaded with supplies for Bell Island in the late 1930s to early 1940s.

Peacefully passed away at her daughter’s home on St. Thomas Line in the presence of her loving family on Monday, March 18, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 77.
Predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Madeline Ezekiel; baby sister, Bridie; sister Joan (Jim) Bouzane; brothers Tony (Diane) and Leo (Geraldine) Ezekiel; parents-in-law, James and Bridget Laurie; brothers-in-law Richard, Wayne, and Michael (Alexa) Laurie; sisters-in-law Mary Squires and Regina Laurie.
Left with fond and loving memories of her loving husband of 53 years, Edward Laurie; her best friend and adored daughter, Lisa; and her grand-fur baby, Missy. Lillian (Lil) was born and raised on the Green, Bell Island, NL, on December 10, 1946. As a young woman, she left Bell Island and moved to St. John’s, NL, to work at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home as a cook. This job was well-suited as Lil loved to cook, often helping her sweet mother, Madeline, prepare meals for their large family of twelve. During her time at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, she met her husband-to-be, Edward (Ed). They had many good times with her family and friends at dinners and dances. She always made sure to make curfew, or else face the Nuns.
Lil and Ed married on September 19, 1970. After they got married, they moved to St. Thomas Line. They soon became parents to a beautiful, healthy baby girl, Lisa Marie. Lil adored her and never left her side. A devoted wife and mother, she decided to stay home and care for her family. As Lisa got older, Lil took great pleasure in travelling with Lisa’s school to watch her take part in various school activities. She especially enjoyed attending the Kiwanis Music Festival to cheer on Lisa’s Glee Club.
During the summer, Lil would work beside Ed in the garden – planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables. She made sure that she had hearty meals cooked for her family. Ed remarked how Lil had cooked Jiggs dinner every Sunday for 53 years. She never missed one, until recently.
Lillian was a quiet woman around most people, but her family and closest friends knew of her quick wit. She was content caring for her family and loved speaking with her siblings, in-laws, and friends on the phone each day. No matter what the day had in store, she always made time to watch her shows: Young and the Restless; NTV News; Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. When the television was off, she loved to listen to VOCM’s Open Line or VOWR. Often, you could hear Lil singing in the kitchen to “those wonderful ol’ songs.”
Lil celebrated her 77th birthday in the Health Sciences Centre, as family, friends, and staff made it one of her best. She felt so special and spoiled. A selfless person, Lil gave her all to ensure Ed and Lisa were taken care of and happy. Lillian never wanted anything but her family’s happiness.
Everyone who met Lil loved her. She felt the love and care, especially in the last six months of her life. Her heart was filled with joy and gratitude for all the special care and support she received. She was truly touched. Lil wanted everyone to know that she loved them and thanked everyone for their love over her lifetime.

It is with great sadness that the family of Charles (Charlie) Bennett wishes to announce his sudden passing on March 7, 2024 at Abbortsford, B.C. Charlie was born on Bell Island on November 10, 1954 to his parents, John and Evelyn Bennett.
Predeceased by his father, John Bennett, his brother Randy Bennett, and his sister, Judy Mitchell, and brother-in-law, Bob Tucker.
Leaving to mourn is his partner of 33 years, Joan, along with stepsons, Norm (Karen), Jim (Jas) and stepdaughter, Darlene. Also lovingly missed by his mother, Evelyn Bennett and his sisters, Diane (Gerald) Penney, Roslyn Tucker, Janis (Phil) Siverns, Tina (Lou) Ferrigno, and his brother John (Diane) Bennett and sister-in-law, Kathy Bennett plus his many friends. Charlie is leaving behind seven step grandkids and many nieces and nephews.
Charlie grew up playing and excelling in many sports such as hockey, soccer and track. After moving to B.C., he kept his love of hockey and soccer going by coaching young players. Charlie took on many trades and in later years became a truck driver and eventually, in the past 11 years, he enjoyed taxi driving in the Town of Hope, B.C. where he resided. Charlie would have left an impression on anyone he met by his jovial and happy demeanor.RIP

Cordswell Bennett, (83), of Cambridge, Ontario, passed away on
March 5 th , 2024, surrounded by his family after a long and hard battle
with Parkinson’s and cancer at St. Luke’s Place Long Term Care. ‍
Our family would like to thank all of the staff at St. Luke’s Long Term
Care facility in Cambridge. Especially Dr. Baker, Sharon Brown and
all of the nurses and PSWs of E-wing, who took care of him and made
his last years comfortable.
Cordswell, fondly known as Coss, was born on March 1, 1941, on Bell
Island, Newfoundland Canada. His parents, William and Audrey,
raised him alongside his 6 siblings Claude, James, Oliver, Roy,
Jeannie and Billie. Growing up, he had a very close-knit family that
instilled in him the values of love, compassion and hard work.
Coss is survived by his wife Gwendolyn and his three children Linzie
(David), Cassandra and CJ (Christa), his grandchildren Amanda (Pat),
Taylor (Jordan), Chelsea (Jay), Cassie, Hunter, great-grandchildren
Jack, Charlotte and Walker. He is also survived by his brothers Roy
(Ruth), Bill (Lynn) and sister Jeannie (Mike), brother-in-law Boyd
(Paulette) and many loving nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was
predeceased by his grandchildren Joshua and Chloe and by his
parents, Bill and Audrey, brothers Oliver, Claude and Jim.
Coss possessed an unparalleled work ethic, dedicating countless
hours to his profession at Dresser Industries and Skyjack Inc. while
still always finding time to be there for his family. One of the kindest
souls on this planet, he was a gentle, giving man who worked
tirelessly to ensure that his family had everything they needed. He
faced every challenge in life with admirable strength and courage.
Coss met the love of his life in Bell Island, Newfoundland. They
shared a true love story together for almost 62 years. Their dedication
to each other cannot be duplicated. Together they built a beautiful life
and raised three children, Linzie, Sandy and CJ. Coss adored his
grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Always a
baby lover, each time a new baby was born into the family he shone
when he held them for the first time. Coss continually provided love
and guidance to his children and found complete delight in being a
grandparent. He took great joy in watching them grow and thrive.
Coss was a great friend to many and kind to all.
Coss had a deep appreciation for building things with his hands and
could build almost anything. Lots of friends and family have items that
Coss built that they will cherish forever. He was an amazing cook,
who loved to prepare food and bake for those he adored. Coss was
quick witted and always enjoyed a good joke. He had the best laugh
that was contagious. He could talk to anyone, and always made a
lasting impression on those lucky enough to know him.

It is with sadness and fond memories that the family of John William Kent wish to announce his sudden passing on March 5th, 2024. He spent his last days surrounded by the comfort and love of his family. John, fondly known as Johnny or Mr. Kent, was well known on Bell Island from his many years as an educator, a member of the St. Michael’s Parish, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His greatest legacy lies with his family. He was so proud of his family and loved to share in each of their joys and happiness. He cherished the simple things in life such as spending time with his beloved Rose, visits with his family, and their time at the cabin, while he enjoyed doing puzzles, woodworking, and watching hockey.
Predeceased by his parents John and Bride (King) Kent, father and mother in laws Bob and Alice Locke; his brothers Kevin, Colin and Blair; sister Sue; brothers in law Ed Whalen, Dennis Halverson and Gage Harpelle; and sisters in law Alice, Pricilla, Marie, Genevieve and Dorothy (Dot).

December 20, 1947 – March 5, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond “Ray” Joseph Lahey at the age of 76. Raymond passed peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
Raymond was born on December 20, 1947, to the late Ralph and Mary Lahey on Bell Island, Newfoundland. He was a beloved husband of 47 years to Linda Lahey (2015) and will be greatly missed by his partner and best friend, Judy Kent. Raymond had many loving brothers and sisters growing up in Newfoundland. He is predeceased by his brothers Edward, Gerard, Jack, Kenneth, Ralph and Sidney, and sisters Delores, Jean, Linda, and Margaret. Survived by his brothers Andrew, Brian, James, Kevin, and Philip, nephew Ralph Ryan (who was raised by Ralph and Mary and was more like a brother than a nephew) and sisters Constance and Mary. He will be greatly missed by his children Tanya (Stephen) Budgell and Trevor Lahey. Raymond was a very proud grandfather to his grandchildren Nicole (Josh), Stephen, and Sydney Budgell, and great-granddaughter Amelia Josephine, whom he adored dearly. He will also be missed by his sister-in-law Eva Skanes and predeceased by his brother-in-law Sidney Warford. Raymond became very close with the Kent family over the years and will also be missed by Keith, Jason (Mel), and Marion (Dave). He was an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Raymond loved spending time with his family. He would spend most of his time watching movies and tv shows with his best friend, Judy – or watching all different kinds of sports while she crocheted little projects for their families. For years, he was always finding new projects to work on around the house with his son-in-law and grandson and would love just sitting around the table on any occasion with all his family playing card games. Raymond approached every challenge with the mindset that nothing was beyond repair and was always eager to share his knowledge with others. He told you the truth even when it was hard to hear but he was the biggest softie you’d ever meet – always taking care of his family and friends first. He was the person who always had a nickname for everyone, and he was a bright light no matter where life took him.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 4pm to 7pm at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club in the Lounge – 1500 Dunbar Road, Cambridge, ON, N1R 6V3. In Lieu of flowers, we ask that memorial donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for all that they did to try to help Raymond get better and to ultimately make him comfortable at the end.

Gerald was born on April 17, 1951, in Bell Island, Newfoundland. Gerald was the beloved husband of his wife, Brenda for 52 years. Along with his wife, Brenda, he is survived by children; Jerry Yetman (Tammy), Angie Kartechner (Jim), and Tracy Yetman. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Robbie Roy, Jacob Roy, Brady Yetman, Keegan Yetman, Josh Vella, Jaxon Allen and sisters Marie Yetman and Rosalind Bickford. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Gerald was predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Margaret Yetman. He was also predeceased by his siblings, infant brother Harvey, Harold, Bill, Wallace, Donald, Dorothy LeBlanc, Mary Woodman, Evelyn Butler and Jean Kirk.
Gerald was an employee of Walker Exhaust in Cambridge for 34 years.

​It is with great sadness that the family of Myrtle Parsley wishes to announce her sudden passing on Feb 29, 2024 surrounded by her loving family and close friends. Born on Bell Island on Sept 19, 1948, Myrtle was a well-known member of the community through her 35+ years of dedicated service working with Dr. Tucker. In addition to serving as President of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary for many years, Myrtle also volunteered with the Kids Eat Smart lunch program at St Augustine’s Elementary, and served on the Board of Directors for both the Bell Island Figure Skating Club, and the Wabana Boys and Girls Club.
Growing up on Bell Island, Myrtle moved to Montreal in 1967 and then on to Toronto a short while later where she married her high school sweetheart, Chris on Nov 6, 1971 following the birth of their daughter Crystal on Nov 1, 1971. Their son Brad was born the following year on Oct 31, 1972. In the summer of 1978, Myrtle and Chris returned to Newfoundland to raise their children in their beloved hometown of Bell Island.
Myrtle enjoyed long conversations, socializing, reminiscing about old times, and having a cup of tea with one of her favorite sweets. Her favorite past times included playing Texas hold ’em, bingo, and dancing while listening to her favorite country music. Affectionately known as "Muck", she leaves behind a legacy of laughter, warmth, and cherished memories.
Predeceased by her husband Chris on Aug 14, 2016, parents Lewis and Jean Pynn(Dwyer) and father and mother-in-law Richard and Hilda Parsley(Mayo). Myrtle leaves to mourn her daughter Crystal (Bill), son Brad (Lori), granddaughters Shelby (Ashton) and Jorja, sisters Leady, Ginny (Ed), Leslie, Lori (Jason), special brother-in-law Kevin Parsley (Irene), close family friends Carol, Kara, and Philip O’Keefe, and Millie Delaney, along with many nieces and nephews, and countless friends and family.
Resting and visitation to take place on Bell Island at Pendergast’s Funeral home on March 4, 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and on March 5, noon to 9:00 pm. Funeral service at 2:00 pm on Wednesday March 6 at St Michael’s Parish, with a celebration of Myrtle’s life at St Michael’s Hall immediately following burial. Chris will also be laid to rest with Myrtle to fulfill their final wish of being together forever.
May Myrtle find eternal peace in the arms of her late husband, Chris. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a doting grandmother who made everyone around her feel loved.

Passed away peacefully February 24, 2024, in St. John’s, Newfoundland at the age of 83. He was born to John Charles and Suzanna (nee Yetman) Hussey on July 2, 1940, in Bell Island, Newfoundland. Charlie proudly served in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces from 1958 until his retirement in 1983. Throughout his career he was stationed in Clinton, ON, Torbay, NL, Greenwood, NS, Summerside, PE and Cold Lake, AB. Following retirement, he worked briefly at Cavendish Farms on PEI before returning to St. John’s where he worked with PAL Aviation Services in St. John’s. Throughout his military career he played soccer and broomball, receiving many championship trophies and awards. He volunteered with minor hockey while stationed in Greenwood and Summerside, coaching his boys when they were younger, and played “Old Timer’s Hockey” in Summerside and Cold Lake. Charlie enjoyed music and played the accordion for most of his life. He was often heard playing on the back doorstep, entertaining the neighbours with some of his favourite Harry Hibbs tunes. He was also a member of the Military Band while stationed in Greenwood, where he played the clarinet. Charlie is survived by his children. Sharon Hennessey (Mike), Joy MacInnis (Wayne), Danny Hussey (Bridget), Dale Hussey (Melanie) and Michael Hussey (Michelle); grandchildren, Jason, Mark, Diane, Timothy, Carson and Evan (their mother, Joan), Madelyn, Milo and Sadie; and great-grandchildren, Chase, Codi and William. Dec. 15, 1942 - Feb. 21, 2024: Walter Edward Ivany was 81 when he went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the 21st of February 2024.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. In his final moments Walter was surrounded by his family and encircled with love.
Walter enjoyed painting, playing his guitar, singing and was very proud of his security job positon. He enjoyed laughing, deep conversations about God and travelling to Newfoundland.

Joan was born in Bell Island, Newfoundland September 8, 1943. At the age of 18 she moved to Toronto. In 1990, Joan married Alex and they developed a love of coming to the cottage in Tiny Township. In 1996, they moved into their home on Stone St. and quickly developed friendships with many people in the community. Joan loved spending her days caring for a number of cats (any stray was welcome), gardening, sitting on the front porch reading or chatting with those who stopped to visit and in later years spending time with her loved dog, Millie, in her lap.

Joan was a very special neighbour to Tom, Colleen, Adrianna, Landon and Isaak, stepping in to care for the kids whenever Tom needed to answer a fire call, which led to a lifelong friendship.

Joan will be missed by family and friends but memories of time with her will live on.In keeping with Joan’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service.

​Rev. Bruce Howard Rideout, July 6, 1961 - February 12, 2024.

Passed away peacefully following a lengthy battle with cancer, Rev. Bruce Rideout, at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville, NL, on Monday, February 12th, 2024 at the age of 62 years. Born on Bell Island in 1961, Bruce was raised in St. John’s and spent most of his adult life in paid accountable ministry, first through The Salvation Army, then in The United Church of Canada.

He will be forever remembered and loved by: his loving wife Sheila (nee Cross); children: Crystal (Tony Burt), Amanda, and Pamela; grandchildren: Damien, Gabriel and Shannon; siblings: Beverly and Brian; aunts and uncles: Wavey Jewer, Carolyn (Martin) Dalley, Ethel (Mac) Diamond, and Harold (Lily) Rideout; as well as a large circle of nieces, cousins, extended family, and friends.

Bruce was pre-deceased by: his parents Malcolm and Gloria (nee Elliott) Rideout; and brothers: Bob and Blair.

May 12, 1930- Feb 2, 2024.Our mother ("Mom"), grandmother, great-grandmother, auntie, wife, and friend, passed away on the morning of February 2, 2024. She fell asleep peacefully with family at her side.

She was born in Bell Island, Newfoundland, to Agnes (Quigley) Kent ("Mommy Kent") and Peter Kent ("Daddy Kent"). She taught school at St. Theresa's on Bell Island before meeting her future husband, Albert at church, and after a long courtship, finally agreed to marry him. They then built a life together, living in Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Halifax, and finally, Truro, Nova Scotia. They had four children whom Catherine loved "to her heart" and with all her heart. Throughout her life, she gave unconditional, unwavering love to her family: siblings, husband, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and to their friends and spouses. She was so proud of them all.

Mom settled in Bible Hill in her yellow house (which she loved). She took great joy in simple blessings: blooming flowers in the garden, good music, and photos of all her babies. She could play a tune on piano and "squeeze-box" by ear. She loved a good giggle with her family and friends, never without a little mischievous twinkle in her eye. She had a life-long passion for chocolate, peanut butter… sweets of any kind. She was a true "lady” in every sense of the word. She was strong, kind, gentle and gracious.

Mom was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Mary (Keels), Elizabeth (Kolonel), Agnes (O'Keefe), Alice (Whalen), and brothers, Edward, Peter, John, Terrance and Richard Kent, as well as her beloved youngest daughter, Debe.

Left to mourn are her husband, Ferreol (Albert) Carpentier; her children, Gary (Charlene) Carpentier, Lisa (Chris MacKnight) Carpentier, Tina (Robert Ganz) Carpentier, and grandchildren, Stephanie (Luke Searle) Carpentier, Matthew Carpentier, Nicholle (Mark MacLeod) Carpentier, Jonathan, Evan and Nolan Ganz, as well as great grandsons, Maximus Searle and Sayer MacLeod, and great granddaughter, Catherine Searle. She will be missed by her dear friends, Jill Greene and Ruth Matthewson.

It is with great sadness we announce that Michael “Mike” Joseph Reid, age 91 years of Mount Pearl (formerly of Bell Island), passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital.

Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73 Commonwealth Avenue, Mount Pearl, on Thursday, January 25, 2024 from 2:00 – 9:00 pm. The funeral service will be held in June 2024, at a date and time to be announced.

Mike was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who valued hard work, faith, service, and most importantly, his family.

Growing up on Bell Island, Mike studied to be an electrician and kept the power flowing to the iron ore mines. He met the love of his life, Jean in 1958, they married in 1960 and started a family. Once the mines closed in 1966, they relocated to Mount Pearl where he worked at the Steel Plant in Paradise. He later re-invented himself again and spent the rest of his career working for Browning Harvey in St. John’s.

During that time, he raised a wonderful and grateful family, enjoying many years together camping, fishing, ski-doo’ing, dirt-biking and sports, including hockey and swimming, amongst others. He was a big supporter of his children and was always there donating his time and cheering them on. He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and both he and Jean spent many years helping to support and build the parish at Mary Queen of the World. He also volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul and gave supplementary math lessons to students that could benefit from that additional help. He did all this with a friendly smile and a great sense of humor. And of course, he loved his Habs!

Mike leaves behind a family who were blessed to have him in their lives and will miss him dearly. They will take with them forever the many wonderful memories and life-lessons he shared by his example.

Leaving to mourn are his best friend and loving wife of 63 years, Evelyn Regina “Jean” Reid (nee Cole), sons: Michael (Patricia), Vaughn (Rose) and David (Andrea); grandchildren: Danielle, Michael, Kristen (Dominic) Giancola, Nathan, Nigel, Alex and Owen, and great-grandchildren Jayceon and Ricardo.

Also leaving to mourn are in-laws: Helen (Len - deceased) Dillon, Gerald (Linda) Cole, Jack (Carol) Cole, friends Louis (Lucy – deceased) Fitzpatrick, Mike (Joan) Jackman and Kathleen (Lloyd - deceased) Hearn, an extended family of neighbors for almost 60 years including Neil and Margaret (deceased) McLeod, Jim and Shirley(deceased) Bradley, Gerald (deceased) and Anita Guy, Don and Margaret Jacobs, Lawrence and Josephine Barron (both deceased), and an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends.

Mike was the last of his family generation and was pre-deceased by his father Michael, mother Josephine (nee Harrington), siblings: John, Gus, Gerard, Agnes, Marcella, Mary and Margaret. We are sure they are all enjoying a wonderful reunion together in Heaven.

Our family would like to thank Dr. C. Smith and the staff from St. Clare’s Hospital 6 East for your outstanding compassion and care. It warmed our hearts to see all of the staff greeting him so warmly as he loved to be called … “Poppy” Reid.

With great sadness we announce that Florence Selena Brown ( Nee Squires) passed peacefully on Jan, 18th 2024.
She was predeceased by her parents, Albert and Florence Squires, sisters Lorraine and Jean brother Roy, sister-in-law Rita, brothers-in-law Bert Phalen and Gerald Lynch.
Left to cherish her memories is her loving and devoted companion Kevin Power and her sisters Edna Phalen, Violet Lynch and sister-in-law Odette Squires, brothers Albert Squires ( Pam ), Donald Squires ( Claudine) and brother-in-law Darrell Sears.
Her precious children, Richard (Jennifer), Lisa (Richard), Barbara (Ron), Roger (Kate), stepchildren Steven Blair and Twila Blair.
Grandchildren, Allison, Virginia, Rebecca, Samantha, Ashley and Nathan.
Great Grandchildren, Selah and McKenna and many niece's and nephews and dear friends.
Cremation has taken place with interment to follow at a later date.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and former Bell Islander, William (Bill) Joseph Normore in his 80th year. Bill passed away peacefully on January 16, 2024, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, while surrounded by family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Sheila, and his adoring children and grandchildren, including his daughter, Jacqui Stoyles (Sean) and their family, Kiel (Megan), Kiefer (Amanda), Keagan (Colin) and sons Mark (Tanya) and his family, Chelsie (Austin), Logan, Harley, and Reed, as well as Brad and his children, Braden, Makenna (Marques), and Mataya. Bill will be remembered as beloved "Pops" to his great grandchildren, Hayden, Presley, Saylor, and Dominik Stoyles. He is predeceased by his son, Barry. Bill will be dearly missed by all in the Hammond and Normore families, and by his many close friends.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest gratitude to community service and the PSW care team that became like a second family to Bill.
Bill will be remembered for his loving heart, the extent of which knew no bounds. He was often found helping friends and family with countless household repairs, driving grandchildren to various school events and appointments, and making people laugh with his wonderful sense of humour. He enjoyed spending time walking and sharing stories with friends over a coffee at the Cambridge mall. To those who had the immense privilege of knowing him, Bill's memory serves as a cherished reminder to help others every chance you get, to laugh loudly and often, and to never pass up the opportunity for a sweet treat.
Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.

With great sadness we announce that Noreen Bridget Lewis (n. Murphy) died peacefully on January 15 at St. Clare’s Hospital.
Beloved wife of Dr. John Lewis – her life partner for 68 years – she was born Nov. 24, 1933 to Mary Moore and Patrick Murphy. Raised on Bell Island, the first of nine siblings, she was a brilliant student, earning degrees from St. FX and MUN, and worked in child welfare and later in education. Wed to John in 1957, she bore six children: two in Oxford, two in Uganda, and two in Newfoundland. Noreen was a dedicated teacher for three decades in Newfoundland and East Africa, where she spent more than 15 years in partnership with her husband. She received the 2018 YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award recognizing her many contributions to community work in Newfoundland and Africa.
She leaves six children: Philip, Peter (Tracey Shave), John (Madeleine LeBlanc), Mary, Stephen, and Leah; nine beloved grandchildren: Marika, Patrick, Liam, Everett, Sarah, Anaïs, Ella Ray, Elsa and Felix.
She is survived by six siblings, an extended family of nieces, nephews and in-laws along with many friends around the world.
The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Friday, January 19th, from 2-4PM and 7-9PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Teresa’s Church on Saturday, January 20th at 11AM.

Passed away at his home on Bell Island January 13, 2024, at the age of 72. Leaving to mourn his wife of 53 years, Violet Louise Taplin. His children Bernie, Scott (Tammie) and Patricia (Raymond) Taplin-Jenkins. Grandchildren Mason, Donovan, Hunter and Alanna (Mason) Ford. Great Grandson expected to make his arrival this month of January. Bern is predeceased, by his son Donavon Thomas, his parents, Blanche and Wilfred. Brothers, Kevin, Walter, Edward, Brother-in-law Don Barnes and Sister-in-law Beverly. He was a caring brother to Wilfred, Gary, John, Patrick, Fred (Michelle), Christine, and Marie. Bern will be missed by his nieces, nephews, friends and coworkers. Mr. T will be missed by many children that he had the pleasure of meeting throughout the years. Special friends Mr. Toni Wiseman, Mr. Bern Metcalfe and his brother Gary (Muck) who went above and beyond. Special thanks to the home-care workers for their patience and kindness. It is with the saddest of hearts we announce the passing of our dear, precious mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, wife, sister, aunt and friend, Andrea Galway (Brown) of Bell Island, NL; who passed peacefully away on January 10, in her 73rd year, with her loving family by her side, in Dr Walter Templeman Hospital. Leaving to mourn, her loving and devoted husband of 55 years, John; her five children Jackie (Glenn), Tim (Roanna), Joanne (Nelson), Charlene (Jason), Shawn; her nine grandchildren, Jacqlyn Andrea, Mitchell, Jordon (Heather), Matthew (Serina), Timmy, Trevor (Tinisha), Tyler (Kristen), Ashton (Sam), Sheldon and two great-grandchildren, Blake and Callum. Also leaving to mourn, her sister, Gloria; brothers, Ron (Rose), Fred (Tena), Blair (Val), John and Keith (Madeline); brother-in-law, Walt Galway; and sisters-in-law, Lorraine Galway and Sandra Galway; as well as many nieces, nephews, card buddies and friends. Andrea was born on Bell Island, July 5, 1951, and is predeceased by her sister, Marie; her brothers, Terry and Rick; her parents; as well as many brothers and sisters in-law. Andrea loved travelling back and forth to ON to spend time with her family and she dearly loved a game of cards and a can of Diet Pepsi. There is nothing she loved more though, than her five children and nine grandchildren; her husband and their 2 dogs, Casey and duch*ess. Andrea lived a beautiful life where she loved deeply and was greatly loved in return. Her hearty laugh and kind soul could fill any room she entered. She will be remembered for her enormous heart, her helping hands, her many deliciously cooked meals and baked treats, her deep, unwavering faith in God and her desire to help anyone, Regardless of if she knew them or not. Although her time here on earth is complete, her memory will live forever through those who knew and loved her, especially her children and grandchildren. A very special thanks to the staff of the Bell Island Hospital - Long Term Care, who were nothing short of spectacular during a very difficult time. November 29 , 1934 - January 8, 2024. With broken hearts we announce the passing of our dad at age 89 of Bell-Island. He passed away peacefully in Walter Templeman hospital on Bell-Island. Born on Bell-Island, he was a son of the late Daniel and Margaret Fitzgerald. Cyril was a taxi driver for 65 years and was well known in his community. He was also a distributor for the Evening Telegram until they started Sunday deliveries. At that time, he gave this up as he wanted one day a week off. He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking them on drives around the bay to attend garden parties, car shows and visit family and friends. Cyril was a very social person and was known for his great sense of humour and an infectious laugh which was easily recognized at any gathering. He loved to tease and torment his friends and family. After retirement, he loved taking weekend drives around NL and exploring new places. He enjoyed hanging out on the beach with the boys. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and more recently his great-grandchildren, who brought much joy to his life and a huge smile when he saw their daily pictures. He was the best father and grandfather anyone could ask for. Cyril will be sadly missed by his children, Rosemary, Linda (Lorne), Cyril Jr. and Ann-Marie (Perry); grandchildren, Lisa (Stephen) Tyler, Alex, Daniel and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Callum; sister, Angela McLean and Winifred Ross; and several nieces and nephews and friend, Loretta. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Theresa; brother, Dan; sisters, Doris Dalton, Theresa Lahey and Evelyn Mansfield; and special friends, Carol and Randy Butler. Thanks to staff at the Walter Templmen hospital, ambulance drivers and the Seniors complex, who all provided exceptional care to our Dad. Cremation has taken place under the care of Pendergast Funeral home. A Celebration of Life will be held in early Spring. A Celebration of Life event will be held on Thursday 11 January at 2 p.m., located in the lower hall of St. Michaels Catholic Parish Church on Bell Island. Passed away at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Thursday January 4, 2024, at age 73 years. Wife of Edward. Loving mother of James (Jamie). Dear sister of Gerald (Louise) Butler, Patrick Shea, Margaret (and the late Claude) Clement, Bonita Shea (Rob Mason), and daughter-in-law Lubellia. Cherished grandmother of Sarah, Michael, and Matthew. Also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Predeceased by parents James and Elizabeth Butler and son Shawn. Memorial visitation will be held at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street, N., Cambridge, Ontario on Sunday, January 14, 2024, from 2 pm – 4 pm and 7 pm – 9 pm. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.

McLean, William “Bill” James –

On Tuesday January 2, 2024 at the Hamilton General Hospital. Bill, in his 85th year, beloved husband of the late Mary (2022) for 60 years. Loving father of Gary (Debbie Booth) and John. Dear brother of Harry (Regina), Don (Joan), Kevin and the late Brendon. Dear brother-in-law of Marion, Marjorie and Gerry. Bill will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and many friends.
