This easy fried mushroom recipe is an easy party appetizer and made even healthier in the air fryer! A crispy, breaded mushroom that can also be oven-baked for the same crispy taste.

Fried Mushroom Recipe (1)

I am not a mushroom fan. I think they’re slimy and smelly, and they are just not my thing even though everyone else in my family loves them.

But every summer at our town’s fair, I have to go to the fried vegetable stand at least once and get the medley of fried vegetables. There are fried mushrooms, cauliflower, onions and zucchini. And apparently if you slap some breading on it and fry it up, I am there for the delicious mushrooms.

Fortunately, these easy breaded mushrooms are so simple to make that now we can enjoy them more than once a year!

Easy Fried Mushroom Recipe

I used button mushrooms for this recipe, but you really could use baby portabellas or any dry white button mushroom you prefer.

The first step is to wash your mushrooms really well to remove any dirt and then let them dry. You can either let them air dry or gently dry them with a paper towel.

You will need 4 small bowls (or a plate) for this recipe. Yes, there are 4 different steps to dip your clean mushrooms in, but I promise that it is easy and would only require less than 10 ingredients total for the whole fried mushroom recipe!

Bowl #1: fill about halfway with water. There’s no real measurement, just enough water that it’s easy to coat them on all sides.

Bowl #2: about 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Bowl #3: 2 eggs, lightly beaten

Bowl #4: 1 cup panko bread crumbs, 1 tablespoon parsley, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt. Mix to combine.

Before I started dipping my dry mushrooms, I lined a large plate with wax paper so I had a place to put the mushrooms.

First dip in water and them immediately dip in the flour to coat. Next dip in the beaten eggs and then last in the bread crumb mixture. Place on the wax paper lined plate as you finish dipping each one.

Place the coated mushrooms in the fridge for about 15-30 minutes to help the coating set a bit. Trust me, you want as much of the coating as possible to stay on. It’s the best part!

Fried Mushrooms in the Air Fryer

I made my fried mushroom recipe in the air fryer because I love how much it makes your food taste like it’s really deep fried without all the extra fat and calories of frying in oil. The first time I made buffalo chicken eggrolls in my air fryer, I knew I was hooked and there was no turning back!

Lightly spray each side of the coated mushrooms with cooking spray and then place in a single layer in your air fryer pan. I cooked mine at 400 degrees for 7 minutes total, flipping them over halfway through the cooking time until golden brown.

You might need to adjust this cooking time based on the size of your mushrooms, but I did 4 batches and this time and temperature seemed to be the magic combination!

Tips for Making Fried Mushroom Recipe

  • These are best reheated in the air fryer so that they stay nice and crispy. You can reheat in the microwave , but they will be more mushy.
  • We like to dip ours in a horseradish sour cream. I really don’t have any exact measurements for this. It’s probably about 1/3 cup sour cream and maybe 1/2 to 1 tablespoon of horseradish depending on how strong you want the extra flavor to be.
  • You could also use 1/2 cup regular bread crumbs and 1/2 cup Panko bread crumbs if you prefer.
  • If you are looking for a low carb or Keto fried mushroom crispy mushroom recipe, I would eliminate the bread crumbs completely and use crushed Moon Cheese instead. I’ve used it as the crisp topping on buffalo chicken bites and many other dishes and it turns out perfectly! For a low carb fried vegetable, you should also substitute the all-purpose flour for almond or coconut flour. I used coconut flour for my keto coconut shrimp (which also happens to be made in the air fryer) and it turns out perfectly every time!
  • This is the exact air fryer I have . I really don’t have any experience with other brands, so all my recipes are tested using this model. I absolutely love it too! I got it as a Christmas present and I use it constantly!
