The European Union (EU) has launched a groundbreaking forest restoration initiative in Ghana, investing 2.4 million euros to transform degraded landscapes and support rural communities. This ambitious project aims to revive Ghana's high forest and savanna regions, addressing critical environmental challenges. The initiative was officially unveiled at the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) in Kumasi, where four organizations were selected as grantees for the two-year restoration endeavor. These organizations, Proforest, World Vision, Nature and Development Foundation, and Goshen Global Vision, will play a pivotal role in implementing the project's objectives. The EU's Sustainable Head of Infrastructure Development, Paulina Różycka, emphasized the vital role of forests in preserving biodiversity, enhancing climate resilience, and sustaining millions of lives. She highlighted the ongoing threats to Ghana's forests, including agricultural expansion, mining, illegal logging, wildfires, and land tenure disputes, underscoring the urgency of restoration efforts. Forest restoration, Różycka noted, is not just a national priority but a global imperative, offering a proven nature-based solution for climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. The project's scope is extensive, targeting the rehabilitation of 5,000 hectares of forest and the empowerment of 20,000 farmers and rural households through agroforestry, natural regeneration, beekeeping, eco-friendly enterprises, and community-based savings schemes. The participation of women and young people is crucial to achieving these goals. The restoration agenda aligns seamlessly with Ghana's existing policies, including the Forest and Wildlife Policy, the Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy, and the Tree for Life national campaign. A significant milestone for Ghana's forest governance is approaching in 2025 with the implementation of the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) licensing for timber exports, indicating a stronger commitment to sustainable forest management. The EU's restoration grants are part of the broader EU Sustainable Forest and Cocoa Programme, supported by the European Forest Institute (EFI), focusing on climate-smart agriculture, resilient landscapes, and sustainable value chains in forest-dependent communities. Dr. Lucy Amissah, Deputy Director of FORIG, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its alignment with the institute's mission to advance forest science, enhance climate resilience, and improve community well-being. She highlighted the ongoing pressure on Ghana's forests, which remain essential for biodiversity, water resources, food security, and the livelihoods of millions. The launch of this project marks a significant step in Ghana's commitment to restoring degraded forest landscapes, with Dr. Amissah expressing confidence in the project's positive environmental impact. Paulina Różycka concluded by acknowledging the contributions of EFI, the grantee organizations, FORIG, and the Government of Ghana, envisioning a future where the interventions yield tangible benefits for Ghana's forests and the communities that depend on them by 2027.
