What is the difference between academic calendar and regular calendar? ›

A Calendar year ranges from 1 January through to 31 December. An Academic year is comprised of two Teaching Periods, January to June, and July to December.

Academic calendar refers to dates and events that a postsecondary institution operates around. Most academic calendars include the add, withdraw and drop deadlines for each session within each semester.

Classes in the first semester usually begins in August and lasts until the end of December, including exams. The second semester runs from January/February to may-June. Winter vacation lasts 2-3 weeks, summer 10-12 weeks. Usually during the semester students study 3-5 subjects in accordance with their schedule.

An expanded school schedule engages students more fully, and children learn better in a more stimulating environment. By reducing the pressure on the system to cram math and reading and science into too few hours, the new school day opens up the schedule for subjects that students enjoy and teachers like to teach.
