Bopping, Moss win at 2011 Super X - Round 4

The penultimate round of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X saw Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Lawson Bopping claim his first ever Super X round win

    November 14, 2011 10:38 AM AWST

The penultimate round of the 2011 Monster Energy Super X, Australian Supercross Championship, saw Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Lawson Bopping claim his first ever Super X round win, but consistency from CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha's Jay Marmont means he leads the Pro Open field heading into the final round. In the Lites class, another round win from JDR Motorex KTM's Matt Moss saw him extend his championship lead to an almost unassailable 22 points heading into the season finale.

Bopping, Moss win at 2011 Super X - Round 4

In clear, dry conditions at Mailtand Oval, all classes turned on some great racing. The track, identified by its long start straight and equally long rhythm sections meant skill and concentration were required from all riders. Both the premier classes were running the 'Triple Header' format of three races each at Maitland.

    LITES
In the first of three eight lap final races in the Lites class, Steven Clarke (Motul Pirelli Suzuki) took the first holeshot, but was quickly overtaken by Carlton Dry Thor Honda's US import, Gavin Faith. After taking the lead, Faith led for the rest of the opening race, taking the win ahead of Moss, with veteran Kim Ashkenazi third.

Monster Energy Kawasaki's Dean Ferris won the second holeshot of the night and checked out for a dominant win, with Moss finishing second again and the Clarke third.

The final Lites race of the night was filled with drama when Faith and JDR Motorex KTM's Brenden Harrison both crashed on the first lap. Shortly after, Steven Clarke got caught on a tough block whilst in the lead and the UK rider went flying through the air to crash out of the race with a suspected broken wrist. This allowed Moss to take the lead and win with GYTR Rockstar Yamaha's Luke Arbon second and Ferris third.

At the end of the night, consistency from Moss once again saw him take out the round win, with Ferris second and Arbon third.

"Last weekend was a bit disappointing for me, but I have been doing a lot of training this week and was feeling awesome after working with my dad," Moss said afterward.
"I wanted to get some good starts and was able to do that and get the win. I want to thank my team JDR Motorsports and my injured brother Jake for coming out and supporting me here today."

    OPEN
In the Open class, JDR Motorex KTM's Tye Simmonds won the holeshot in the first 10-lap Triple Header final. Simmonds couldn't hold the pace, though, being overtaken by Lawson Bopping and Hart and Huntington/Insure My Ride's American guest rider, Chris Blose, midway through the race to push him back to third. Bopping and Blose battled it out for the lead, with Blose the eventual victor.

After building momentum and consistency in the previous round at Campbelltown, CDR Rockstar Energy Yamaha's Jay Marmont took the second holeshot and bolted to win comfortably from Bopping and Carlton Dry Thor Honda's Todd Waters in third.

In the final Open race at Maitland, Bopping was on the pace again, claiming the holeshot ahead of Marmont and Blose. With each lap, Marmont gained on Bopping before eventually making the pass to take the win. Bopping held on for second and Blose was third.

Bopping's consistency meant he won the round - his first this season - leaving Marmont in second and Blose third on a count back after tying with Waters. Second place from Marmont was enough for him to take the overall lead of the championship for the first time this year.

Simmonds, who led the championship heading into this round, was the big loser on the night, losing the championship lead after finishing 12th in the third triple header final. With one round remaining, Simmonds now sits five points behind Marmont, with the CDR rider looking a strong chance to take out his first ever Monster Eenrgy Super X title.

"Getting this win is awesome and so good for the whole team," said Bopping. "The track was hard and slippery by the end of the race so it was tough racing out there."

    UNDER 19s
In the Under 19s class, Raceline Pirelli Suzuki's Errol Willis once again dominated in the Under 19s class, Sam Martin was second and Thomas Larsen Moss third. Kurt Waterman took out the Michelin Development Series with Hayden Mellross second and Billy Jackson third.

The final round of the 2011 Australasian Supercross Championship will take place at North Ipswich Stadium this Saturday November 19.
